Value - Poem (c) Colleen Haddock
99cents on any block
in this slum world
abused, forgotten
just one of those girls
you see and want to collect
like a cheap gashapon figure
from a machine you pass by
later relegated to the back of your mind
never asking, why the eyes so haunted
why the fear of speaking up
why the attitude of a disgraced
and beaten soldier
fighting a daily war
with no hope of leave
or of returning home
a home she never had
a survivor, scarred, damaged, worthless
too aware
too on guard
too unable to get close
to a future once promised
never delivered
One of my favorite office supplies...
is personalized pens. These are just so useful, and people don't throw away pens since they're always needed. They also tend to switch hands a lot, or can be given away as school supplies or promos, so I've always loved them. I used to own a different company that gave these out and plan to start handing out some with my new company site on them at conventions soon, but as far as free promotional items, you really can't go wrong with these. Great for web sites because most people I know have post it notes and such beside their computer, along with a writing utensil, so they'll end up seeing the web address over and over, reminding them to check it out. They're really cheap when you buy them in bulk, and much better than handing out a business card... Also, if you do something which requires filling out forms or you meet people and there's going to often be a situation in which you'll need to offer them something to write with, even if you're using it personally, it's a nice, professional touch.
Am I normal or nuts? We all know I'm definitely not the first one.
Reader's Digest (I love this magazine) recently published an article called Are You Normal or Nuts? with some questions from people explaining their unusual behaviour and asking how abnormal it is. Oh boy, do I have some that weren't covered, but I do share some of the odd traits - not the fear of heights, and not the problem getting a second date, but I'm wondering if you could guess which ones I do from reading the article? Just take a guess, and maybe even tell me one of your more embarassing or strange habits?
Some things I do that aren't mentioned - I have this hatred of lamps. I avoid them if I can, and even though I need one for my art desk, there's no way. I've been trying to remove my fingernails permanently for years, but they always grow back, and I'm overly superstitious. I'm also obsessed with eventually having all of my coathangers match, which is completely silly, since visitors won't see them. It's actually on my goals list. And once I start collecting something, I go overboard.
I was personally amused by the stepping on cracks one, since everyone around me laughs at how superstitious I am, and how obscure some of the ones I follow are. Also, the food one amused me, because I've been wondering forever if it was all women or just me who don't like to eat in front of people they don't know well, like when you're taken to an event? I prefer dates that don't involve food, or at least not until the end of the night, when I'm more comfortable around the guy. Which two were your favorites, and are you guilty of them? Sooooo...Are You Normal or Nuts?
